Goals Get You to the Finish Line

At this time of the year there is quite a bit written about goal setting – how to write them, how to break them down, how to achieve them.  There is the S.M.A.R.T. method, positive thinking, affirmative thinking, burning desires and tactics and strategies.  Exactly who do you listen to?

Well, here’s another opinion.  I think you listen to what works.

There are some ways of doing things that works for everyone.  Because of the way that our bodies and brains are wired there are certain things that work – whether you believe them or not – they work.  Like gravity works for everyone.  You get out of bed in the morning and you fully expect your feet to hit the floor.  That’s gravity.

If you had the opportunity to watch “The Secret” you also know that the Law of Attraction also ‘just works’.  Now my opinion of why it works and how others say it works is different.  But it works.  It is a universal law and applies to everyone.  One group of people believes that it happens because the general universe hears your plea and delivers.  I believe that when we desire something with emotion and persistence we are also moved to action that brings that which we desire to our doorstep.

And when we are moved to such an action we are also more willing to opportunity where we may not have before.

And this, for me, is the basis upon which I build and achieve my goals.  I first find my burning desire, the reason why I get out of bed in the morning and power up the computer.  The reason why I stay up writing until mid-night.  The reason that drives me through challenges and over obstacles.

That reason is different for each us but you HAVE to know it in order to ultimately be successful and achieve the goals you desire.

I have a friend who was 80 pounds over weight, smoking and widowed.  Several years ago she told me that she wanted all that to change.  Over the next year she quit smoking, dropped 50 pounds and started dating.  Let me repeat this – at the same time she stopped smoking she also lost 50 pounds.  Not many people can do that.

She had a very strong reason and it got her through each time she was faced with the desire for a cigarette or a donut.

I have to know my reason why.  And some of my goals have different reasons than others.  But my overall reason for getting up in the morning and powering through the day is to be able to give back to others.  I am driven by service.  At the moment the majority of my service is to my children – four in the house, none of whom drive, makes for a bit of service.  But I know that once they grow and leave the house I’ll still be driven by the desire to help and serve others because that’s who I am.

My formula for achieving my goals may be simple but it takes a bit of effort and time – much like anything else that is worth doing.

1. Identify what I want to achieve
2. Break it down into smaller achieveable tasks that are measurable, achieveable, specific and have a timeline.
3. Identify the reason why I want to achieve it
4. Develop an affirmative statement that encompasses the end result and repeat it several times each day.  This part helps to keep me focused and identify the actions that take me toward my goal and which ones are detrimental to the end result.
5. Keep an action list of items that must be done in order to achieve the goal
6. If I don’t know all the tasks I start with the beginning and trust that I will be able to find people or resources I need to finish
7. I visit the action list every day and up date it.
8. I keep my eyes on the goal to get past the challenge of the daily work.

I use this list of 8 items to guide my actions and achieve my goals.  Since developing this system I have been successful with personal, relationship and business goals that I have set. Sometimes they come faster than I anticipate and other times more slowly.  I find that the real difference between those that come quickly and those that come slowly is how deeply I am committed to them.  In other words – how much of the Law of Attraction I can trigger through my feelings and emotions, and therefore affect my actions.

You have a choice, each and every day – not just on New Year’s Eve – to develop a plan and goals.  You can effect a change in your future. You determine your future – it doesn’t just happen.

So go out there and get it!
